Many astronomy suppliers require large upfront orders before granting dealer access. In smaller markets like South Africa, this can easily drive up prices and force retailers to carry stock that doesn't always reflect real local demand.

AstroGear takes a more measured, demand-led approach. We keep a curated selection of gear in local stock, while expanding our catalogue and supplier relationships based on what local users are actively looking for - not just what's available to order in bulk.

We pay close attention to what customers ask for, what's being bought and sold on the marketplace, and the conversations we have with the community. The gear we list is also informed by real-world use, extensive review research, and products we'd genuinely trust and use ourselves. This helps guide what we keep in stock, what we offer on request, and which brands we explore next.

Backorders are part of that model. Instead of forcing the whole community to carry the cost of slow-moving stock, we can list and source a broader range of specialist products on request. That gives customers more choice while helping us keep local pricing sensible.

Our goal is to make the local option competitive with self-importing once shipping, duties, VAT, exchange-rate risk, and warranty support are taken into account.
