Our Story
We started AstroGear to solve a problem we know well as astrophotography enthusiasts. We love capturing the night sky, but too often, the gear we want is only available overseas, with high costs, long delays, and unnecessary frustration.
AstroGear was created to change that. Our mission is simple: make quality astrophotography gear easier to get in South Africa, with clear pricing, local support, and fewer surprises.
We began as the official South African dealer for Player One Astronomy, focusing on the cameras and accessories most relevant to local imagers. Since then, we've added carefully selected products from brands like Optolong, expanding the catalogue based on real-world demand rather than trying to stock everything at once.
Community-Driven Approach
Many astronomy suppliers require large upfront orders before granting dealer access. In smaller markets like South Africa, this can easily drive up prices and force retailers to carry stock that doesn't always reflect real local demand.
AstroGear takes a more measured, demand-led approach. We keep a curated selection of gear in local stock, while expanding our catalogue and supplier relationships based on what local astrophotographers are actively looking for - not just what's available to order in bulk.
