The Player One FHD-OAG MAX has been carefully redesigned to provide improved mechanical clearance, better protection against stray light and smoother guide-camera focusing. It retains the large prism and rigid construction of the original OAG MAX while introducing practical refinements based on feedback from astrophotographers.
The helical focuser housing has been significantly narrowed, reducing its maximum outer diameter from 53 mm to 46 mm. This slimmer profile creates additional clearance around cameras, filter wheels, adapters and cables, helping to prevent mechanical interference in compact or complex imaging trains.
The reduced diameter is especially useful in tightly spaced configurations where the guide-camera focuser may sit close to other imaging components.
The redesigned housing is more than a cosmetic update. Player One has refined the internal structure to minimise unwanted light entering the guide-camera path.
Improved light sealing helps preserve contrast around guide stars and reduces the risk of stray light or internal reflections affecting guide-camera exposures. This provides cleaner guide-star signals and more dependable tracking during long-exposure astrophotography.
The integrated helical focuser now requires less rotational force, making fine focus adjustments smoother and more comfortable. The guide camera can be focused accurately without changing the prism position or disturbing the main imaging train.
Once focus has been achieved, the locking mechanism helps keep the guide camera securely positioned throughout the imaging session.
The FHD-OAG MAX uses a large 8 x 14 mm rectangular prism with proportions close to the widescreen sensors used by many modern guide cameras.
Its low 8 mm prism height allows the prism to be positioned closer to the centre of the telescope's light path, where it can collect more light without unnecessarily obstructing the main imaging sensor. This provides a generously illuminated guide-camera field and improves the likelihood of finding suitable guide stars.
Unlike a separate guide scope, an off-axis guider uses light from the telescope's primary optical path. This helps eliminate differential flexure between the imaging and guiding systems, making the FHD-OAG MAX particularly useful for long focal-length telescopes and extended exposures where precise tracking is essential.
The FHD-OAG MAX can be incorporated into a wide range of imaging configurations using compatible threaded adapters or Player One's screw-mounted accessory system. This allows it to be paired with suitable Player One cameras as well as cameras and accessories from other manufacturers.
Compatibility depends on the available connection threads, adapter arrangement, mechanical clearance and total backfocus requirement of the imaging system. These measurements should be confirmed when combining components from different product ranges or manufacturers.
The OAG is manufactured from 6061-T6 aluminium, providing a rigid yet lightweight structure. Its secure mechanical connections help minimise unwanted movement or flexure within the imaging train.
